Marie Macklin C.B.E. is to receive an honorary degree from Glasgow Caledonian University next week.

Commenting on the accolade, Marie said: “I’m both thrilled and proud to have been considered by GCU for this honour and I will work hard to live up to their expectations. I love young people and I will be doing everything I can to help the students at GCU to follow their hearts and to be all they can be.”

Nine to be honoured at summer graduations

During our summer graduations on July 3, 4 and 5, GCU will award nine honorary degrees in recognition of achievements and contributions across a range of backgrounds.

The recipients are:

• Line of Duty star Martin Compston will receive an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Letters in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the world of television, his fundraising efforts with Ardgowan Hospice and his commitment to GCU students.

• Bakira Hasecic, founder of the Association of Women Victims of War, will receive an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Laws in recognition of her outstanding contribution to human rights and justice for women in Bosnia.

• Richard Brodsky, US lawyer and politician, will receive an Honorary Degree of in Doctor of Laws recognition of his outstanding contribution to environmental and conservation policy in NYC, the promotion of corporate governance and his encouragement of the University’s work for the Common Good.

• Mabel van Oranje, international human rights activist, will receive an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Laws in recognition of her outstanding contribution to human rights across the world and her commitment to non-profit organisations such as the Malala Fund, Crisis Action and the Coalition for the International Criminal Court.

• Marie Macklin CBE, founder of HALO Urban Regeneration Company, will receive an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Business Administration in recognition of her outstanding contribution to the business world and her outstanding commitment to GCU students and the work of the University for the Common Good.

• Phil Differ, comedian, scriptwriter and journalist, will receive an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Letters in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the world of television scriptwriting and his commitment to GCU students.

• Owen Sharp, CEO of Movember Foundation, will receive an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Science in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the world of healthcare and his inspirational leadership as CEO of the Movember Foundation.

• Hazel Brooke MBE, former chair of GCU Court, will receive an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Science in recognition of her outstanding commitment and contribution to the University in her role as Chair of Court from 2015 to 2018, together with her time as Vice Chair and her contribution to governance issues on the Committee of Scottish Chairs.

• Yvonne Anne Strachan CBE, former Head of Equality, Scottish Government, will receive an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Laws in recognition of her outstanding contribution to equality and human rights and her work with the Third Sector for the common good.

The honorary guests will join more than 2,600 students graduating from Glasgow School for Business and Society, the School of Engineering and Built Environment and the School of Health and Life Sciences, at Glasgow Royal Concert Hall.
